Our last attraction for the day was to see the mosaic Madaba map on the floor of the St Georges Greek Orthodox Church. What we did not expect was that the church service, including a number of Baptisims would be starting as we got there. Apparently our guides had phoned to confirm times but these were not quite accurate. Guides are not permitted to explain the map while in the church, this is done in the visitors centre so we had that, went for coffee and then waited. And waited. And waited. Eventually we went into the church and stood at the back watching the babies being ceremoniously dunked in the water with much wailing. We met the one mother and gorgeous baby as they were leaving who were full of smiles and probably relief! The priest then gave us a short talk which was both interesting and informative and finally, the carpet was rolled away to reveal the mosaic map. It was most impressive but by this stage it was late and we were all ready to head for our hotel.
