At Sea on the Constellation

We have been on the Constellation for several days now. We have re-acquainted ourselves with familiar aspects of the ship and discovered the changes resulting from its renovation last year. Our select dining option (flexible hours, open seating) has turned out to work very well for meeting new people every night. We have been, however, finding ourselves enjoying totally the wonderful company of Gene and Sheryl, from Boyton Beach, FL.

Our cabin is really quite comfortable. On one side, the entire wall overlooking the sea is composed of ceiling to floor windows. It is somewhat dizzying to stand there and watch the sea rushing by below your feet. The living room is relatively large with a computer desk and a bar/refrigerator area. The dining area seats four. The separate bedroom has a second large screen LCD TV and an adjoining walk-in closet with a stool and dressing table. The bathroom has a dual sink vanity and large jetted tub. All in all, it promises to be a very comfortable trip. Our butler, Igor, appeared shortly after we had come aboard and reviewed some of his services – daily fresh fruit and flowers, afternoon tea service, evening canapés, etc. Thereafter, Nancy had an evening glass of soy milk waiting in the refrigerator for her. Every afternoon, Igor appears with a tea cart filled with goodies.

It is clear that the feature of the cabin that Nancy likes best is Igor.


The Constellation was renovated about a year ago and it was interesting to compare it to her un-renovated sister ship, the Millennium, on which we had sailed in New Zealand and Australia. Most noticeable were the wine tasting area where dozens and dozens of wines were set up in machines that allowed you to insert your ship card and select a "taste," half a glass, or a whole glass. There were regular wine tasting seminars, wine-food pairing seminars, and wineglass pairing seminars showing on the ship's program of activities. A martini bar with an ice-top was a new addition as well. Finally, “Le Bistro” had been created as creperie and to serve specialty coffees.

We had our first specialty dinner at the Tuscan Grill. This restaurant was a favorite on the Millenium and remains so here on the Constellation. The old flower conservatory has been converted to use as the restaurant. It has better acoustics, for quiter dining, than the old design. The staff were absolutely delightful. Before the evening was over, the waiter was pressing into my hand his address and e-mail info for his home in Macedonia, insisting that, should we come to Macedonia, we would never be without a place to stay.

At sea

The ship left Port Everglades exactly at 4:30 PM on Saturday and proceeded due east into the Atlantic toward Bermuda and the Sargasso Sea. On Monday, having reached about mid-Atlantic, it turned northward and has been heading on a northeast heading ever since. Right now, we are on day four of the five days sailing required to reach Port Delgado, The Azores. That will be our first, brief, stop. There, we understand, a good percentage of the crew, who had been working over the Caribbean winter circuit, would be replaced by new crew who would be working the Baltic and Mediterranean season. Crews are always ready to share about their home countries, their families, and their joy to be returning to both for even a brief time. This feeling of joy upon knowing a long voyage is ending has probably been a constancy since the first sailors left their shores for more than a day of fishing.

We have shared a dinner table with others on nights we dined in the main dining room. Everyone has been totally delightful and interesting. Hope that they think kindly of us as well.

This morning we decided we had to walk off the wonderful dinner we had at Ocean Liners, the specialty restaurant, so we walked the track around Deck 10. We did 5k and felt good afterward. Nancy wants to know if we are going to do 10k tomorrow!
