Flag of Portugal  , Azores,
Thursday, April 3, 2014

During our wait for our flight and still on the plane we spoke of Porto. It is a beautiful city with lots to do and see. I would go back there but probably won't because there are so many other places to visit. If you are ever heading to Portugal do not miss Porto. Five days was perfect.

Our flight to the Azores went very quickly at two hours and fifteen minutes. The real bonus was we gained an hour as we approached Ponta Delgada. The plane was pretty well empty so we were able to move around a bit. Tony was able and very happy to watch the approach from his view and could see the outlines of the islands and the lights coming on as night was creeping in. We disembarked, walked to the terminal, our bags were there waiting, grabbed them and hopped in the taxi for downtown. How easy was that?

Our taxi driver could not speak English, he was very pleasant we quickly arrived at our hotel, Vila Nova Hotel, in the historical section of downtown Ponta Delgada. The traffic was non existent. This hotel we learned is owned by a family who did spend some time in Canada, the discussion came about because of the obvious maple leaf behind the front desk and later we begin to notice the leaves are everywhere, even on the towels. We were told we would feel at home here, we do but it is because of the people we have encountered, and we only just arrived.

We stay put, it is dark, late for us and it has been a long day. We will see what tomorrow brings. The weather is the big question and will dictate our activity. No matter what we will embrace this island as much as we can.

We are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on the island of Sao Miguel, hard to believe!

More tomorrow, good night.

Bom dia Jane & Tony!
My father-in-law Luis grew up just a few blocks away from the Vila Nova.
You should come across some paintings by Domingos Rebelo who was Luis' great uncle. A wealthily family on the island sent him to Paris in the early 1900's to study art. He is a national treasure and he painted island scenes much like our Group of 7 painted the Canadian landscape. There is a museum dedicated to him in Ponta Delgada and his paintings are everywhere.
Hopefully you will visit Terra Nostra park in Furnas. The hotel there has some of his paintings in the lobby.

These are the islands where Mike Dell and his band were invited to play during their summer music festival. They told me if you got there you'll love it!
