No April Fools day here until Kate got us with a monkey joke, it worked but you had to be here!
We left an hour later than planned today, nobody's fault, we got caught in the spring forward thing! Off to Baena! Olive tasting!

The drive was very interesting because we went on the new super highway! No going around the mountains, going through tunnels like Italy! What a gorgeous drive. Spain comes second after Switzerland for the most mountains in the world. They begin at the top of the country and go all the way to the sea. When we did get close to our destination, I have to tell you that within ten miles and probably more, the only trees in sight were olive trees, no others! They were at every stage of their life! Our mouths hung open, incredible! The aroma in the air started to change, the temperature dropped and you felt fresh...honestly it was different. when we left our villa it was 22, in Baena it was 16. We felt good!

We arrived at Nuñez de Prado, the prize winning olive oil producer in the world, they are the first only organic producers. Using their own waste, as in olive pits, the flora and fauna, the black water separated from the oil, and turning it back to the soil to fertilize has allowed them to be recognized as leaders in the industry. Looked at as fools when they decided to go organic, they are now the only ones to hold five stars in their oils! They say if you spray pesticides you will eat pesticides....smart.....

Our tour was fun, we were there in the off season, olives are harvested between December and February. We were fortunate enough to have Fransisco Nuñez de Prado take us around, a retired Diplomat, he is a very proud member of the family whose great grandfather in 1875 started the business. He was, I think in his 80's and he stole Katie's and my heart. He was proud, but he also was wise, he would keep reminding us about organic. He lost his "beloved brother" to brain cancer, the man who turned this olive grove to organic. They will keep the promise of this forward thinking young man, forever. He teased Tony about the Italian olive oil, he teased us all about vineyards and the wines that " after two or three drinks of wine, you haves dreams you cannot remember but after one drink of olive oil your dreams come true". He had the four of us in the palm of his hand!

There are lots of details I could tell you but the photos will do the trick, seeing this was just as much fun and more important than any wine tasting! I loved it!

There are other stories about this day that I will share but I truly want you to know, this was a wonderful experience!

Take care,
