I got up and around and left Amersterdam to head to Berlin. It took a little bit and a stop by a cop (I was on the side of a major rode trying to read the map, oops) to make it out of town but I was finally on my way. The weather was PERFECT for a mc ride. I was driving through the open country side and all of a sudden smelled "Colorado" style pine scents.. and sure enough a mile up the way the terrain turned to amazing wooded forest area. The forest are lasted 30 miles or so and then went into lush green rolling hills. I had a fun time with a kid at the gas station who couldn't speak English, we played a game of trying to figure out what the other was saying but finally gave up after it wasn't working so well. I knew the Autobahn and unlimited speed was a few miles away so I did a check of the bike at the station to only find ripped seal on my drive shaft. I was pretty worried but decided to go for it anyway. I luckily saw a motorcycle shop before I hit the autobahn so I pull over and chatted with the guys. They sent me down the road to a BMW shop. The shop is in a gorgeous rolling hills area. I walked around while waiting for the rubber to dry (we glued it to be able to make it to Berlin to a BMW shop that could fix it). The guys were very friendly and told stories of their time in the states. To get to the Autobahn I went through 30 minutes of lush green hills on a small two lane road that was very fun to drive with a motorcycle. I then proceeded to get on the famous German AUTOBAHN where I was getting passed by Mercedes and Porsches doing 140 mph. It was a experience I'll never forget while riding a bike. Getting blown by like you are standing still is unbelievable. The scenery was so green and beautiful it was hard to concentrate on driving because you just wanted to stare at the countryside. I actually passed in the third lane a few times, which was reserved for 140 mph cars, just so I could have a quick feel of what it feels like to pass two lanes doing an unlimited speed and have no worry about getting a ticket.
I arrived in Berlin late at night and drove around looking for a place to stay. I drove onto a four lane street and then right into Brandeberg Gate. This is the place which has so much history ranging from Hitler, the cold war, to the Berlin Wall. They all revolved around this structure. To see it at night was amazing. This was the road Hitler drove on, the road and place the citizens crossed when the Berlin wall came down, and I was there on it with my motorcycle..it was an amazing feeling.
I spent the next day fixing my bike and taking a concentration camp tour outside Berlin. It was so surreal to be there in the barracks, the oven rooms, the morgue, and the overall walls of a place where people were abused, tortured, and murdered out of cold blood. It made us really appreciate what we have. The hostel runs a Berlin pub crawl on the evenings where you get to go to all the old blown up buildings that have been partially renovated (bottom level) into these unbelievable night clubs, restaurants, and bars. It was quite an experience. The next day I spent the morning on the best walking tour I've ever done. We saw and learned more about German history in 4 hours than one could ever imagine. The places and facts we learned made me realize just how much history Berlin has.
I quickly hopped on the MC afterwards so I could try to make in to Prague by nightfall. More thumbnails ...
