March 1 already.
After leaving Paraty we had two days on the road. Stopping at Bertiogo and Swiss Chalet. Didn't get to see any sites, they were literally drive days and campsites for overnight stops.
Arrived in Foz do Iguaçu on Monday 26 Feb. What a place. Swimming Pool, nice bar, comparatively luxurious facilities and a welcoming BBQ. For the veggies it was Vegetable Omelettes - and they were really good.
Next day started quite early with a trip to the Itaipu Damn, one of of the seven wonders of the modern world. The largest hydroelectric power station in the world. It was impressive. A huge wall cut across the meander of the Rio Parana, forcing the water into 18 turbines generating 14,000 mW of power
That afternoon we ventured to the Iguazu Falls, which were absolutely astounding. The visit began with a trip to a nice Bird Park. We finally saw a Toucan - highly appropriate as we are on a 'Tucan Tour'. Got my picture taken with a parrot or two...pics will follow, honest!
Moreover, were the falls themselves. Absolutely breathtaking. Every corner we turned was more impressive than the last. Totally majestic, a natural wonder.
That night we had Pizza and Guarana (the local specialty carbonated drink), which was welcomed by all, but especially Fianait, Sophie and myself, who were on cooking duty.
Yesterday, we experienced the falls in a completely different way. We crossed the border into Argentina (it took two hours!) to visit the falls from the Argentinian side.
For the princely sum of £15 we had a boat ride on and into the falls, a jeep through the surrounding subtropical jungle, a train journey and raft in parallel to the falls.
Most exciting of all was El Gargantua del Diablo - The Devil's throat: a walkway to the very heart of the main falls. The spray was amazing, the views phenomenal, although an eerie feeling enveloped you.
Today, as I write this, we are stuck in Foz - doing some serious shopping for Havaianas - in a thunderstorm. What fun. Tomorrow, Bye-Bye Brazil, and off to Asuncion, Paraguay.
Until then,
J

Iguazu Falls
. The sluice gates were open and the vastness of this man-made beast was overwhelming. That afternoon we ventured to the Iguazu Falls, which were absolutely astounding.
