We leave Rotorua by 9:30 for our hour drive to Mount Maunganui. It is a beautiful sea side town, much like we imagine a small Australian town to look like (we may be very wrong) with totally bodacious surf dudes in tow. We have a coffee and then take the walk around the mount itself - a beautiful walk around the edge of the peninsula along the rocky coast. There has been a recent oil spill and the beaches around the mount are closed off, we can see the bio-hazard staff still working below.

After a stroll up and down the strip of shops in from the sandy beach to buy some board shorts to swim in, we go down to the beach. The water is freezing, like, Brighton beach freezing, which is a bit of a surprise to us with the hot sun and the tropical looking surroundings. We last all of 15 minutes and then decide to head over to the hot water pools near by to warm up. And that we do! The pools are very hot and we enjoy relaxing until a load of fat northern blokes wade into our little private pool and ruin our groove. We leave and head out to dinner on the river front at a nice place to sooth a sore throated Claire.

The drive back is pretty mental as it's basically rush hour but we see a maximum of 10 cars for the entire hour and a half journey.

When we're back in Rotorua Jo calls her amazing Granny to wish her a very happy 90th birthday - what a woman!
