The best we manage is to curl up on the floor of a quieter gate, using our bags as horrible pillows, to the sounds of a collection of australian airport staff having 'banter' and the airport announcements. We manage bits of sleep and everytime we wake up, more and more people are sitting around us. We have a hysterical 10 minutes when we roll around the floor crying with laughter. Cant remember why.
After our nap we wander around the airport, trying to kill time before our flight which doesnt leave until 5:30pm. The most infurating thing is that there are flights to Auckland leaving all day, at least one every hour. Our attempts to swing an earlier flight just result in more 'sorry darling, no darlings'.
When we finally arrive in Auckland, it is about 10:30pm. We are greeted by a taxi driver, kindly organised by Claire's stepdad's Dad, Les. He is sweet, but definitely talks too much and takes so long getting our change, he leaves with a tip. We arrive in Haast street where Claire's stepdad's sister Natalie lives and where we will be staying for a few days. The street is deadly quiet and when the taxi driver leaves, we wander up and down the drive for a good half an hour. Our instructions say that Natalie is at 12A. We find 12. After some time of walking around in the dark, probably looking like burgarlers, creaping into people's back yards and shining our torch, we settle on 12 and knock. Nothing. Knock again. Nothing. A little louder. We discuss sleeping on the door step, but decide a last chance stroll down the drive and Natalie is at her door. She says, "are you staying here?" and we are very thankful to at last get into bed, and alive!
