Its an early start as we prepare to do another day of over 100km of driving, this time along Laos main highway, Route 13, which runs north to south. The first section to reach it is through perfect jungle covered mountains with a road that winds back and forth but is nonetheless sealed making for easy driving.

We expect Route 13 to be back to back with buses and trucks and other equally dangerous traffic, overtaking on blind corners and generally being a hazard to anyone on a bike. In reality it is practically deserted for the most part and we breeze along it without much hassle at all. Its 2 and a half hours straight down to Thakhek. We stop only a few times for fags, bum massaging, water and a noodle soup lunch.

As a result we are back at the Travel Lodge at an exceedingly early 1pm. We opt for a more expensive room where the bed doesn't feel like sleeping on concrete and then drive the bike that we still have for the rest of the day into town to get some internet. Here, Jo manages to speak to Mummy Palmer on Skype for the first time in an age and its a good catchup despite only being able to hear here in one ear and have the sound an video cut out every 10 seconds - good ol' Lao!

Once back at the Travel Lodge we have a congratulatory beer over dinner to celebrate not dying on the roadS of Central Laos. Whilst doing so we spot a Swiss lady we met (very) briefly in Nong Khiaw and end up chatting to her for the entire evening. She is Judith and we think she's pretty bloody great (we manage quickly to get beyond the, now a little tiring traveler chat of where you going/ where you been, and it is very refreshing) so we exchange details and say that maybe we'll meet again in Pakse in a few days time.
