Flag of United States  , New York
Friday, July 22, 2011

We have time to update our blog because today we are trapped on the sofa maneuvering our non-portable fan around with us to keep cool. As of yesterday the weather has been ridiculous with highs of 110 degrees in more than 50 US cities, including parts of New York state. When you see pigeons rolling around in a puddle (don't know where it came from because it hasn't rained in over a week!) you know its fucking hot. Looking forward to the next thunderstorm (forecast tomorrow or sunday.)
Never the less we manage a pretty busy week.

Sh!t Theatre flyers made and Jo had another evening at Dixon Place where the comedian performing was very interested in her take on Rupert Murdoch's pieing. Jo is a little confused when asked 'How is everyone reacting to it in Britain?'.... If Jo was in Britain this would have been a bit less confusing.

Hangover. After doing the usual 'one drink' in Iona's which always turns into many drinks until 4am, we wake up saying "Hallo hangover!" However we soon have to get over it and get ready for Wreckless Idol, an event we have been looking forward to since we arrived.

We make our way to Avenue C, and bump into Leo on the way, who will later live up to the promise he made Claire of 'channelling Johnny Rotten live on stage, in honour of the Brits.' And we are not disappointed.
The show opens with Robert introducing the mayhem and a woman playing an indigenous instrument from Kazakhstan. What could possibly follow? How about a drag queen's rendition of 'poor unfortunate soul' from the little mermaid, a man singing about getting bird shit in his mouth, a 60+ white lawyer talking of his experiences in a virginia prison (he wasn't visiting a client..) beat boxing, spoken word, a man with the most extensive collection of percussion we have ever seen (cow bell included), Joey John doing an impromptu performance of 'oh what a beautiful morning', and, of course, Leo
Prize winners are decided with a show of crazy, wild, silence. Prizes include some ginger tea, a packet of medium roast coffee and a toy rabbit that had been in Robert's apartment for 3 weeks, origin unknown.

We leave exhilarated and thinking that New York is going to have to try pretty damn hard to top that evening and Robert promises that he'll make sure the next one in August will happen before we leave. Joy.

Today is the day the temperature rises into the 100's so we're lucky to have a Lost Lounge rehearsal to go to with Lois and Peggy in an air-conditioned apartment in the East Village. This rehearsal is to prepare for the performance we will be assisting them with at an arts centre in the Catskill Mountains next week. The apartment belongs to Viv, the composer and third performer in the show. Its a great experience to watch them work and see how flexible they are with their material. At one point Claire declares that she doesn't get a joke from the show and this triggers a 10 minute laughing fit in everyone; this is commemorated by the line 'I don't get it' being added to the show.

In the evening we go to Prospect Park, out in Park Slope, Brooklyn to see the Dance and Sing-along Westside Story Showing they have on. Jo is desperate to enter through the Sharks entrance on 10th street but we get a bit lost and end up entering through the 11th street entrance as Jets. Boo. The atmosphere is great as people sing along, quote out loud and cheer and boo at the right times (the only disappointment is the absence of dancing).
Afterwards we walk through Park Slope, a very leafy and beautiful suburb to the bar where Bronwyn works. When we get a cab home we pass the Brooklyn bri(iiiiiiii)dge - this is the closest we have got to it yet!
