The past two days we spent in Cluj-Napoca was at our first couch surf! Our host was a very kind and fun French teacher named Michael. He had lived in Poland for a while with his girlfriend, and then they both moved to Romania for her work. There was another Romanian girl that came to stay a few nights in Cluj, for a film festival that was going on at the time. We all helped Michael make a cous cous salad which we had with amazing Polish meatballs for supper. The old architecture in Cluj was awesome too. Some of our highlights were Saint Michaels Roman Catholic Church, that had a tunnel staircase to a balcony where we could see a massive pipe organ. The Tailors' Bastion, which is a medieval wall and tower by a university with art throughout the levels of the tower. We also walked up to a lookout point on a hill where we could see the whole city and the tops of the medieval churches and towers climbing above all the other buildings. The view was amazing. All in all, there is not a whole lot to see in Cluj, but it is an interesting city in the fact that has quite a bit of history attached to it. This part of Romania has switched hands frequently between the Romanians and Hungarians. The city also has a strange look about it, with all the street cables left over from the communism era, which is pretty interesting. We were not too disappointed with Cluj, because we know that we will still have many more exciting cities ahead of us!
