So when the day came I was ready. Luggage in hand I made for the airport again, paid too much for a hire car and drove witlessly around the labyrinth that is LAX until I found Hannah. Once again I had my partner for the journey ahead.
So we quickly set off along the massive freeways. Here I started to appreciate the scale of the continent - twelve lane highways stretched as far as I could see without any intervening countryside. It seemed we would be in Los Angeles forever when suddenly our turnoff arrived and we were there - Disneyland
Completed under the watchful eye of Walt Disney himself in 1955, the park contains a wide variety of themes from the Wild West to the future. Wandering through all these however, one begins to realise that the true theme IS Disney. Here the meaning of the word Disney-fy is coined and exhibited in textbook fashion. All the "worlds" are constructed under a kalaeidoscope of colours and treated with artificial sweetener for the consumption of zealous children. That may be somewhat a cynical view, but anyone who has been on "It's a Small World" has to agree. No matter what the intentions, my claustrophobic memories in Hong Kong of rigid animatronic midgets singing the same glaring tune in different languages for ten minutes while I rode inescapably along a canal were burned into the deepest recess. I approached with fear.
Somehow though, along the course of the day my view changed. The overwhelming combination of warmth, gaggles of smiling children, stomach churning rides and a fair dose of sugar removed most of my cynicism and I could no longer decipher whether I was bewildered or bedazzled. To cap off the excess, there was even a enormous fireworks display. Maybe I had finally understood the magic of Disneyland.
