Aside from its revolutionary heritage, Boston exports one major commodity - education.  In a city of only six hundred thousand citizens it contains no less than six tertiary institutes and it is said that three of every 4 people here is either a student or staff of those six.  I punctuated my visit with two of the most well known.
Harvard is possibly the most famous name in all schooling.  It forms such a heavy meaning in my mind without any actual basis.  I set out to discover what makes this place just so hallowed and desired. Its presence in the small town of Cambridge is so great that a small village exists within it and the city's planners must adhere to its strict architectural requirements.  Fortunately, this intimidating atmosphere is not oppressive but rather inspires a humble appreciation.  There are few things otherwise that distinguish this with any other college.  Of the buildings only the Science Centre and Memorial Hall create any presence, yet amongst all the grounds I get a deep chill - knowing that it is within the very same grounds geniuses, innovators and leaders of tomorrow are groomed.  Still I felt that as a visitor only a facsimile of the true experience exists.  There is no way I could imagine reading amongst the first edition Gutenberg bible or eating amongst six thousand fresh minded youngsters.
MIT provided a much different perspective to study.  The grounds were open, the students energetic and even the buildings more oddly eclectic. What I could not discover was the relationship of these divergent neighbours were. A hostile collaboration or a collaborative hostility?
