After a lovely and too short stay in Unawatuna we travel to Kandy on the Friday. The super 8 matches have started by now and fortunately the West Indies are playing in Kandy in a group with Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand. The other four teams are Australia, India, South Africa and Pakistan, also called the group of death, play their matches in Colombo.
West indies have won their first match against England and I watched that from a hotel in Unawatuna the evening before we leave for Kandy.

We decide to hire a driver with van to take us from Galle to Kandy it's a long trip and we have to go back to Colombo to go to Kandy from there. All in all it's supposed to be about 5 to 6 hours drive, so we have been told. Our driver picks us up early in the morning and we head to Kandy.

The roads and traffic in Sri Lanka is very chaotic to say the least but also our driver seems to be in a rush and is not someone I would recommend to any of my friends for a nice drive from A to B.
After we stop for a short break just after we reach Colombo we had to Kandy on Kandy road, what else could the street name be. Our driver who still seems to be in a rush carries on with his rushed driving style. And not long after the stop a motor police passes us, stops us In the middle of the road and start a heated discussion with our driver. Our driver is summoned to hand over his license and the police, two young fellows, jump back on their one motorbike turn around and leave. Our driver gets back in the van mumbles something about big problems, turn the van and heads back in the direction we just came from heading towards Colombo.

He doesn't tell us what has happened and does not answer questions we ask him either. We go back to where the police checkpoint is and the heated discussion between our driver and the police continues. Apparently our driver crossed a line to overtake that was not permitted and the police saw him and gave him a stop sign which he ignored. Then the 2 police jumped on the bike to follow and stop us. To cut a long story short our driver was in deep trouble and got a big fine. This is not exactly the kind of excitement I was looking for in Sri Lanka.

When we continue our journey we shake a stop at Pinnawala Elephant orphanage to ride an elephant and look at the largest herd of captive Elphants in the world. They bath in the river twice a day and even though we had a delay we are still in time for their daily afternoon river bath.

After the elephant ride we still have some distance to cover to get to our destination in Kandy. We arrive at Amanda Hills hotel late in the afternoon and I must honestly say I was very happy to arrive at our destination in one piece. Our rooms are great overlooking Kandy lake and just a stunning view over Kandy.

Later in the evening Mark joins us at the same hotel. I managed to pursuade him to come over to watch the matched since he is working in Mumbai and is just around the corner.
