Once again - we send greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina - although this time we are happy to be spending this week with our good friends Bruce and Candy. Bruce and Candy actually flew down before we did - they flew on Copa Airline from San Jose to Panama and then Panama into B.A. and arrived the evening of June 30th. They didn't waste any time getting out and about - they had dinner the first evening at one of our favorite restaurants from our last visit here - El Mirasol down in the Puerto Madero, waterfront district. They dove right in with wonderful bottle of Malbec, Empanadas, Potatoes Provencal and ....... Carne!! Ribeye for Bruce and Filet for Candy. **They didn't get the memo on taking photos - so you will have to imagine what their first meal looked like!**
Their first full day in Buenos Aires had them sleeping in until 11:30 a.m.! They headed out for lunch at a nearby restaurant and then explored the Plaza de Mayo - the Casa Rosada, Cabildo, Metropolitan Cathedral and Bank of Argentina
Jim and I took a different route to reach B.A. We flew on Continental and went first up to Houston and then 10 ˝ hours later we arrived in Buenos Aires. It was an overnight flight and we were able to upgrade to First Class with miles so we slept all night and by the time we arrived in Buenos Aires at 10 a.m. we were ready to go. We checked into the hotel, Hotel Moreno www.morenobuenosaires.com and we have a room in a separate little corridor that we share with Bruce and Candy - we share the corridor, not the room. Our room is very cute - with a pretty good size balcony - too bad the weather isn't a little warmer.
We are visiting Buenos Aires during their winter months. It is crisp and cool with temperatures in the 50 - 60's during the day and 40's during the evening hours. So far it feels great and I would imagine with the sun shining it would feel much warmer than the actual recorded temperature
We headed out to explore the area of La Boca, I had heard of a very good, domestic restaurant and recommended that we try that. We got in the taxi and I told the driver where we were headed and even showed him on a map - well - I ended up having to navigate for him - he really didn't have much of a clue - the area is not the most desirable and as we neared the dock area and had to drive under the overpass I got a little nervous - there happened to be a movie shoot going on and we had to detour around that which involved taking a dirt road behind some run down buildings. We saw the restaurant and I was thinking to myself...what have I done, maybe this was not such a good idea. We got out of the cab and then I realized that we might have trouble finding a cab in this area, I led everyone to the front door of the restaurant and when we walked in it was full of locals, there was one table available and we quickly sat down as more people started filing in behind us and forming a line. The aroma was wonderful and the atmosphere was definitely not that of a tourist restaurant. The owner/wife waited on us and treated us like old friends - we ordered a bottle of wine right away and then started to decipher the menu and check out what the other patrons were eating. There was a huge bowl of soup on the table behind us - so we ordered that - Candy noticed some guys eating some type of meat with rib bones attached and she ordered that - I stuck with my old standby of Filet Mignon and Jim and Bruce ordered up a couple of Ribeyes - we had a Russian salad, puree of squash mixed with puree of potato, sweet potatoes and French fries to round it all out. The meal was excellent - another bottle of wine was necessary and we sat and enjoyed every bite and every last drop.
Needing to walk off some of that meal - we called for a cab to take us to a safer area in La Boca
Back to the hotel for a bit of a rest. Jim didn't sleep as well as I did on the plane, so he took a nap and Bruce, Candy and I went out to Café Puerto Rico for a coffee and some medialunas. We had a bit of a late siesta and dinner last night was at Filo Ristaurante and Pizza and Calzones were accompanied by a nice red wine and a naked lady.....

. They had a coffee at the famous Café Tortoni and then took part in a little retail therapy. Dinner took them back to Puerto Madero and a different restaurant - Rodizio - a Brazilian Churrascaria - this is helping them to try all the different cuts of the Cow in one fell swoop!! They have a great little diagram of a cow from El Mirasol and they are checking off cuts one by one. They made up for sleeping in by staying out until after 1 a.m. that night.Jim and I took a different route to reach B.A. We flew on Continental and went first up to Houston and then 10 ˝ hours later we arrived in Buenos Aires. . La Caminito is an area of La Boca that is close to the dockyards. A very poor area and a bit of a rough neighborhood. To help spruce the area up, locals began using paint from the ships in port to paint their corrugated tin buildings. Nowadays it is a bit more dramatic and makes for a fun tourist site.
