Having travelled so far north of Edinburgh, I now had to plan two or more consecutive days of walking with a stopover in between. My plan was to stay with Margot's brother Steve and family in Brechin.
Leaving home at 7am a series of three buses delivered me to Carnoustie just after 10am. It was a dry, sunny day with a cool breeze at my back as I headed along the beach.
I arrived at Arbroath in good time, stopping for lunch by the harbour. At first I had wondered if Arbroath might be my final destination for the day, but now the long haul up towards Montrose seemed attainable. However, north of Arbroath the cliff top path became increasingly indented. Beyond Auchmithie the designated coastal path moved away from the cliff top, zig-zagging across farmland - definitely not the shortest distance between two points
