My first walk of 2012.
Having travelled so far north of Edinburgh, I now had to plan two or more consecutive days of walking with a stopover in between. My plan was to stay with Margot's brother Steve and family in Brechin.
Leaving home at 7am a series of three buses delivered me to Carnoustie just after 10am. It was a dry, sunny day with a cool breeze at my back as I headed along the beach.
I arrived at Arbroath in good time, stopping for lunch by the harbour. At first I had wondered if Arbroath might be my final destination for the day, but now the long haul up towards Montrose seemed attainable. However, north of Arbroath the cliff top path became increasingly indented. Beyond Auchmithie the designated coastal path moved away from the cliff top, zig-zagging across farmland - definitely not the shortest distance between two points. I reached Lunan Bay in late afternoon. At low tide I had the enormous beach to myself. Leaving the beach at the hamlet of Lunan a network of minor roads would lead me to Montrose. I was somewhat dismayed to read a signpost telling me that Montrose was still six miles away. The sun was not far from setting and a full moon had already made an appearance to the east. Walking along unlit country roads was not in the plan but the moon was reassuring. Earlier than planned I phoned Steve to alert him to my whereabouts. He said he'd be happy to collect me and would call back later to check on my progress. As it turned out I made it to the welcoming streetlights of Ferryden, on the southern edge of Montrose in the twilight and that's where Day 14 came to an end, with 22.8 miles in my boots, the longest leg so far.
