I've made it to Australia and will start in Adelaide to visit my family buy me a car. Travelling Australia by car seems much more appealing and flexible to me then travelling by bus or airplanes. A big roadtrip from Adelaide all the way up to Cairns! But first I've got to find a car that's cheap and will last all the way. Easier said then done I can tell you...
A close friend of my family, Dominick, is an Italian mechanic. Seriously, he good be a main character in The Sopranos series! He's helping me by checking the cars that seem interesting to me on endurance and safety.
Three long days of looking on Gumtree, calling people and a couple of testdrives but it does not seem to work out. As I am about to give up hope we get a call from Dom telling us he found a car for sale and wants me to check it out with him. It's a 1995 Ford Festiva and 168000 kms driven. We take a testdrive and it seems the Timing belt has to be replaced and the exhaust as well, cause the car makes a much tougher sound then it's suppose to do. I decide I want to take it since I'm running out of time and want to start my journey.
The seller asks 1500 dollars. I manage to buy it for a 1000! It is a good deal, don't get me wrong! But there will be some repairments and buying registration that adds 750 dollars on top, so I spend 1750 dollars on this car.. The idea is to sell it in Cairns again for at least 1200 dollars. If that works out I'm pretty sure it was a succesful way of travelling and cheap as well. But I musn't get ahead of myself.
Dom fixes the car and it drives pretty good now! I'm very happy with my car, actually the first one I've ever bought and owned!
In Adelaide I visit Cleland park, a big reserve full of kangaroos, koalas and other related species. I've bin here almost a week now and every day I've walked along the beach enjoying the sun and the big thunderstorm that was there on one day. My family takes me to the market on saturday where we buy some food for my roadtrip. Catching up with them was very nice and I really enjoyed my stay with them. To thank my family for their hospitality I took them out for a nice dinner. On my last day I actually get to do some voluntary work for my family. Joe is working for the Lions Club, an organisation the collects, stores and sells used furniture and all kinds of stuff people normally throw away. The money they make goes back into the community.
Finally, it's wednesday! I'm starting my roadtrip and can't wait!
My next destination: Mount Gambier
