The next day Emma wants to show me the peninsula, actually an old volcanic crater which is now partly filled up with sea water. Emma has a car and picks me up. The drive is very nice and scenic
. After a nice picknick down at the bay we head back to Christchurch. Before the night falls I visit the botanical gardens and just chill out and reflect on my experiences. It's very clear that Christchurch is ruined in a way. The whole citycentre is a complete warzone and not accessible anymore with ruined buildings like they were bombed. Lot's of people seem sort of depressed which is completely logical when you loose your house, business, friends or even relatives during the earthquake. It's frustrating to see that rebuilding this city takes extremely long, cause once again it's all about power and politics. But still when you look closely there is hope. Little initiatives are created to rebuild Christchurch, like the new container shop based mall. As terrible as the earthquake and it's aftermath must have been and still are, I really hope the people move on and try to get positive again since Christchurch still is beautiful in a way and has plenty to offer. After a really nice day I get to bed early since I've got to catch a 7AM bus next morning to Kaikoura, where I hope to finally see some dolphins!
It's time to visit Christchurch! It used to be the best city in New Zealand. Christchurch was booming and alive! Well.. Not anymore.. Not after the earthquake my Dutch friend Emma tells me. She lives in Christchurch and is kind enough to show me around in Christchurch. At night we go to a bar and have a couple of beers and talk about Christchurch and the adventures I've experienced in NZ so far. It's fridaynight and I want some music! Even though most of the nightlife was destroyed with the center of Christchurch during last years earthquake, I still find a spot where people are dancing. It's like a have a sixth sense for that ;) Ok it's nothing fancy but it will do just fine for now! This turns out to be a great night with good conversations and a lot of beer :D
