We completed our morning walk via a lovely bookshop which we'd frequented many times in the past, and I couldn't resist a small purchase (a selection of Nick Hornby articles from an American literary magazine in which NH has had a column for several years).
The plan for the afternoon was to meet the others at Manhattan Beach at 1pm. This necessitated a drive to the airport, and then south from there to the coast. Just a few minutes after leaving the freeway we turned over the brow of a hill to see the little Manhattan Beach pier extending into a sparkling sea, and the pavements over-flowing with cool and trendy types in dark glasses and designer gear....a perfect match!
We soon spotted Julliette and Morteza with the girls (including Lara), and found a spot on the beach for a small picnic lunch. After clearing away the towels, plates and the remainder of the food we set off for a walk down the coast to Hermosa Beach, about a couple of miles away. The promenade ran alongside a wide, sandy beach, with sporty types playing beach volleyball, whilst the rest of the world walked by. At Hermosa we found a lovely cafe, which provided an ideal staging point before returning along the sea-front to Manhattan Beach. The sun was by now slowly slipping towards the horizon, and just before 5pm it disappeared from view. We drove back to Pasadena as the dusk-sky gently darkened, providing rather lovely views of Los Angeles' night lights.
As I write Juliette is taking Olivia and Lydia to a party somewhere "up the valley", and we are relaxing in our little flat before heading back to Pasadena for dinner.
