Over the past few days, we've been cleaning the Locomotive Barn and preparing for winter. Part of the tasks have included washing and using a floor scrubber to clean the floor… In the process we’ve opened the valve on the boilers and have drained them down… here several days after we’ve emptied the fire boxes we still have heated water in the boiler… just 12 – 15 degrees warmer than the room around us… yet still warm… now that the boilers are empty we’ve washed them out. In addition we have a wheel on the Jupiter that has a flat spot on it… The park has contracted with a vendor to manufacturer a new wheel and install that wheel on the current axle… When the locomotives were built all the patterns that were used in the casting process were given to the park service so a new wheel will be cast, machined and installed by next spring…
On the 119 the Pilot needs some repair (cow catcher) and it will be removed, refurbished and re-installed
I removed the coal and wood from the tenders a few days ago and they’ve been power washed out and the tenders have been drained..
Did you know that an Engine without a tender is called an engine, that an engine plus the tender is called a Locomotive . . . a train isn't called a train until it has cars . . .
We drove to Salt Lake City Saturday where we attended a Home Show . . . We got back to Brigham City in time for the End of Season Potluck for Staff and Volunteers of Golden Spike . . . It was held at The Depot which is an antique Train Depot (over 100 years old) . . . See http://utahrails.net/up/brigham-city-depot.php . . . a Good Time was had by all! . . . also see http://www.trainweb.org/ogdensub/BCDepot.html
Moving on to other area’s, the roadbed across the area of UT and NV west of here scoots around the lake… Salt lake has many, areas that of interest…
One of those areas is called the Spiral Jetty… the Spiral Jetty looks to be about the size of a couple of football fields, the last time we were here it was under water but you could see the growth under the water and it looked like a ram’s horn the way it spiral’s around in circles.. see the enclosed photograph… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral_Jetty . . .
This evening we drove to the Spiral Jetty and took many photos of the Jetty uncovered. See several of those photos posted here..
