Did you know? … Geese on the ground = Gaggle, Geese in the air = Skein, Geese in the water = Flock … The geese are now getting ready to leave and head north … we see gaggles, skeins and flocks several times a day here! And, we're getting pretty good at identifying the different birds in our trusty Peterson Field Guide Western Birds! Not too bad for amateur birdwatchers!

Today’s tasks include a trip to town for a gate, completion of the fence started a few days ago and installation of a gate that was purchased today...   and the weather has finally improved so we're back to painting the offices … Connie’s tasks for today also includes a trip to the Klamath Falls Visitor Center (downtown) for local printed info … Connie has been tasked with updating the Host Manuals … then scanning historic pictures into .jpg files for an electronic file … Jim kidnapped me from the office to hang the gate (I think Jim is high maintenance!) and don’t forget that Connie gets paint duty in the afternoon … mostly 'gofer this and gofer that’! We have BEFORE pictures in this blog ... We'll show you the AFTER pictures in our next blog!

We have a grain bin on the wildlife refuge that is left over grain from the farmers dumping grain at the silo's (storage bins) here in town...  it's grain that has fallen on the ground, has chaff, and dirt in it.... and has been donated for use here...  a few days ago we brought a 5 gal pail of it home....

Home for us, is where we have the RV parked for April and May....  about 30 ft off the side of the RV we've been putting some of this grain on the ground...

We're surprised in several ways....   1 - how fast the different birds have found this... 2 - how often they come in to fill up on the grain...  3 - how some of the squirrels, rabbits come in and eat the grain as well.....

The weather has finally gotten better...   with the better weather we've had a chance to wash the window on the trailer... (no rain) and just sit and watch... its fun to watch the dog... climb on the sofa and point at the birds out the window...  Geese, Ducks, Pheasants, Black Birds, Sparrows, Quail, Chukar and other birds we've not yet identified...

I put the 500 mm lens on the camera and sat for maybe 45 min while the birds came in to feed... I think the biggest bird that frequents our front yard at least 3 to 5 times an evening is a large pheasant... he's really a nice size bird...  we actually feel sort of sad for him.... as he comes alone each evening without a hen or two in tow...  He's also VERY photogenic and is our leading actor in our photo slideshow!

So part of this blog is our just sitting here...  taking pictures... I'm sitting here writing this and the dog has his paws on the sofa with his head looking out the window... looking at all the birds... at times he shakes from excitement that the whole sofa moves with his shaking...

We have friends here in town... friends from before kids... and we had lunch the other day with one of those friends... We met up with Randy & Mickie and sat and talked most of a day....  had lunch... Connie did some wash … I was blown away to find that both of them are doing SMART Reading...   START MAKING A READER TODAY Program....  Randy is sort of crusty as am I... and it was a surprise to see him doing this... he shares that most of his time is being a substitute dad for kids who don't have one in the home... gone, left, in jail that kind of thing... and he finds that most of the kids can read, just don't want to read.... so he's spending time working with kids to read... THEN HE DROPS THE BOMB...  in his spare time he donates time at some of the kid type fairs here in town and paints faces for fun...  kids stand in line to have their faces painted for the day... so here's my crusty old buddy painting kids’ faces...

This morning I took time to head to coffee... Randy sits there and shares that I'm not to forget that we're going to paint faces Saturday, 10 - 2 pm...   I said, sure, I'll work with the kids to direct them in line... and Randy politely shares that he'd found an extra tackle box, extra paint and now it’s my turn to sit and paint faces!  I don't have a clue if I'm up to this... but if it’s for the kids I'm game... To be continued in our next blog ...

Happy Trails!
