We spent almost the entire drive today in the deserts of northern Arizona and southern California.  Cruising along Highway Forty at eighty miles per hour in a climate controlled SUV is a somewhat detached way to experience the majesty of the stark desert landscape.  But even cloistered in this insulated and window-tinted cocoon, the beauty was palpable.

I longed to get out of the car and hike out into the desert--feel the hot sun on my back and the sand beneath my feet.  Feel what it means to be truly thirsty, and taste the way water tastes when it is slaking that thirst.  But for now it was enough to be surrounded by the solitary vastness of the desert and enjoy it from afar.

I suppose this longing for the deprivations of a Spartan existence in the wilderness is the unique province of those who have never known such deprivations.  I further suppose the intrepid Americans (and Spanish and Mexicans) who had originally settled this land on horseback would be envious of our modern metal steeds and the luxury and speed they afford.

The sage brush is always greener on the other side, and I do envy my pioneering ancestors and the unitary lives they led, an existence purged of extraneous pursuits and distilled down to a purity of purpose--surviving on and with the land.

...He muses as he types on a laptop poolside.  It's kind of hot out in this here desert, I guess I'll take a dip, and have a cold beer.  Maybe civilization's not so bad after all...
