We had a couple of days in Sannur on the East coast of Bali before Mum and Dad (Jim's) joined us for a couple of weeks holiday in the sun and a nine month holiday re-union - we had both seen and done loads since waving Mum and Dad off at Newark train station, seemed like a life time ago.....
We met up with Mum and Dad at their hotel, The Bali Hyatt (they weren't quite on a backpacker budget!)...smiles all around and a few tears, was great to catch up! We were originally planning to meet them at the airport, but we left them to enjoy the most of their Traditional Balinese greeting at the airport - lots of bowing and covered in flowers!!
We had an excellent couple of weeks in Bali including plenty of superb eating, lots of fish and seafood not to mention the odd great steak here and there. I think the folks were amazed that there was somewhere on the planet Earth cheaper than Spain. The cost of lunch for the 4 of us including drinks was normally around 250,000 / 300,000 Rph sometimes cheaper, which is only approx 15GBP!! Lunch or dinner normally averaged approx 4GBP per head - excellent value and great food!!!
The currency did however take some getting use to with 18,500 Rph to the Pound - 80,000 for a cab ride and nearly Half a Million Rupiah for dinner - it sounded expensive!!
We had plenty of time relaxing on the beach, a couple of day trips around the Island and even shot over to the Gili Islands via Catamaran for 2 nights stay on Gili Trawanagan (next TravelPod entry).
All in all a great time in Bali and great to catch up with Mum and Dad, a good laugh was had by all - with plenty of great food along the way!!
Unlike most of Muslim-majority Indonesia, just over 93% of Bali's 3.1MM population adheres to Balinese Hinduism, formed as a combination of existing local beliefs and Hindu influences from mainland Southeast Asia and South Asia.
