Melaka is a small town with alot of old colonial history. Previously invaded by the Portuguese in 1511 and then the Dutch and British until it finally reached for Malaysian independence in 1957. This used to be a major shipping port but now more of a tourist area.
We visited the Portuguese area to sample some of the local Portuguese dishes here....had dinner at the Restorante de Lisboa but I'd say there a was a lot more Malaysian than Portuguese influence at work here...V spicy. I did get to practice my Portuguese a little by chatting to a local man who had Portuguese descendency called Pedro.
The rickshaw's here are all trying to out do each other by being the most colourful and sparkly! Take a look at the photos. Walking around the town was like being in a history lesson. Loads of old style buildings from the various era's - really interesting and sweet place. One of the best things was that along any one road you might see a Church, a Hindu temple and a Chinese temple all near by each other ...and without any of the usual crap that goes along with this!
