We arrived in HCMC on Thursday evening....the old capital and the largest city in Vietnam with a population of approx 7 Million, previoulsy known as Saigon - renamed HCMC after the war.
With over 4 million mopeds and motorbikes in the city we once again had to employ the Hanoi strategy of road crossing .ie. slolwy in a straight line and the riders will swerve around you!
HCMC was a bustling vibrant busy city with lots of bars, restaurants and a buzzin atmosphere. It was in HCMC that a fellow English man John and I had the pleasure of watching England beat France in the RWC semi finals, after many beers and much wandering of the streets, finally found a bar that was showing the game live at 2am......
I also visited the Cu Chi tunnels from HCMC on a day trip. The tunnels were an "underground village" with an abyss of interlaced tunnels having a combined length of more than 200 km underground! The tunnels were key in the Vietcon's battle against America and South Vietnam. After visiting the tunnels it was clear how ingenious the guerillas were and what a key part these tunnels played during the war. The tunnels were deep enough to withstand airel bombs and also concealed well enough to stay hidden from the enemy.
Our guide on the trip also fought in the war, so he provided an amazing if not morbid insite into the historical conflict along with 3 evident bullet wounds from the war.....
Whilst Jim did that trip, I signed up for a FOOT massage and was rather surprised when they stuck some cucumber slices on my face and massaged my head! Actually the description of it being a foot massage was a total lie...was a whole all over body massage including clicking and cracking all the joints! Very nice but a little unexpected!
