Off to Richmond - The fossil capital of Australia - apparently it is known for its world renown collection of marine fossils. Stopped for coffee and cake and kept driving to Hughenden where we plan to spend time 4WDriving in the national parks around the area. Booked into a caravan park where they have an area for 'self contained vehicles' a long way away from the rest of the caravan park and provided we do not use any of their facilities it is only $6 per night. Went exploring the town and it started raining! And I mean raining - there is a sea of water around the motorhome. Took Jim out to Chinese all you can eat = for fathers day.
4th September
Filled up the Jimny and headed out to Porcupine Gorge National Park about 60km north of Hughenden. It is a spectacular gorge system running for 27km. There are 2 lookouts and a walking track to the bottom of the canyon and you can also camp out here. It has been called Australia's little 'Grand Canyon'. The second lookout was toward the Pyramid which has been formed by the eroding action of the creek. There obviously had not been any rain out this way as the tracks were very dry. We saw an interesting way to BBQ beef on the way out there!! We saw black tyre marks and followed them for about 2kms and came across a burnt out cattle trailer. Not sure how long it had been here but the tyres were still smouldering. We also did a round 4WD trip on the Bysalt byway which was really a waste of time as there was nothing real interesting to see. It was a warm day again about 35c.
