Where I stayed
well we~re almost done in rio. heading off tomorrow - by speed boat no less - to an island down the coast, one thats supposed to be all cut off, with no banks and no shops - we hope it has a pub still! its called ilha Grande and everyone says its amazing, so Salvador is out and ilha grande is in. going north would of been great but time wise and prce wise going south seems to make more sense.
Rio has been amazing. after 3 mights in el misti hostel in copacabana, we moved over to Ipanema, which is the up market bit with all the night life and rich, beautiful people. we fit in just fine. its a lot more expensive, but when you go out you dont feel like you~re going to get mugged, which is always nice. we~re stopped waring our gringo money pouches. but we~re still being safe.
So far in rio we~ve done
The big statue thing - very cool
Sugar loaf mountain - good but the best bit was hiking half way up. when you~re actually on the ¨loaf¨ (as we call it). it doesnt really feel like a mountain. more a concreat platform in the sky. we saw monkeys though and got told off for feeding them. apparently they dont like being given beer - who woulda thought?
The maracana - see jims entry.
Copacabana beach - beautful
A favela funk party - amazing! it went on all night and we had to take our shirts off to fit in. but we~ll spare you those pictures.
Lapa Street party - the home of Samba.
Ipanema - cool but not very brazilian. its like staying in Knightsbridge (with a twist)
Plus we met a cool, mad artist who arrived in brazil from chille in the 70s and decide to decorate an ugly set of steps in senta teresa (the ones jim and i are sitting on in the photo). he continues to decorate the steps today, once he has completed the steps, he destroys part of them and starts again - ¨this crazy and unique dream will only end on the day of my death¨. one cool dude!
Its been raining for 3 days now. me and jim have been engaging in a bit of culture, reading and playing scrabble. (and drinking beer of course). We~re trying to get out of holiday mode as ou money is not getting s far in brazil by cooking food at the hostel and drinking less but its not really working yet. although, last night we staying in for dinner and had brazilian lasagnia.hmmm....im supposed to write about our amazing time we~re having here and make you all jealous, instead im telling you what we had for tea.......maybe ill let jim write in future!
Right, we~ll let you know how the paradise island is when we return. in a way, the UK is a lot like a paradise island. in a way....
