We made it to the lovely city of Prague after one of those not so lovely overnight train journeys - why do I always think they're a good idea????! After losing our Lonely Planet we thought we could pick one up here, not so easy @ 620 Sunday morning, and actually managed to muddle our way through the morning all by OURSELVES! Easy actually. The train station was so like something out of a movie with little old ladies with scarves on their heads gibbering at us with teeth missing and everything - great stuff. First impression from the station was that this would be a reallz basic backwards place, but the city is really modern once zou get into the centre.
We thought it was off season here - but no, heaps of European tourists come here on winter break , so its packed and we struggled to get anything. In the end found a hostel that is so cheap, and the room to ourselves bigger than our Adelaide house! Which we neede after all that travel and poor sleep.
Prague really is a magical city - everyone said it was their fave city in Europe and I can see why, every building is gorgeous, ornate, special, the streets are cobbled everywhere, and the white lines and arrows are white cobble stones. Every building is gorgeous, painted, with arches and intricate decorations. Amazing. We have taken some great pictures but I feel like it's not worth it after our last ones got stolen, I'll have to have great memories too, so must start respecting my brain!
We did a huge tour yesterday and walked around all day, Simon is my DIY tour guide with a big map and good legs. We found some cool modern buildings today too.
And everyone says it's so expensive here, but it's pretty equivalent to Aussie prices really. Except for the beer... 50cents for a half litre of Staropramen (4pounds in London!) and the vodka, 750ml for $4, could´t go past that reallz!
Haven't really been able to find any "traditional" Czech food so far, it's pretty cosmopolitan really. The cafes have all American tunes, it's kind of my whinge of the day - can you escape globalisation? It's all good and well to be able to find good coffee everywhere, but it's the same shops everywhere, when I have kids they won't need to travel, because the whole world will be totally homogenous, and everywhere will speak English and sell the same food. So annoying! We'll get further off the beaten track as time goes on though I'm sure. It's just cities that bug me, overcrowded, overpriced, with theives, becoming homogenous.
