We set off Friday afternoon with sleeping bags and a tent, just in case, some sweet snacks, five ipods, and a car full of friends excited for St. George UTAH as that was the only place we were sure we were going. We drove along, stopped in vegas for a little taste of culture and as Phil would say, Vegas has every culture. We went for New York and I learned what gefilte fish is. We made it to St. George around 10 and snuck five people into a very small hotel room and watched a little E before heading to bed.
The next morning we got up and got some Denny's -- it ended up being a favorite during the trip and then headed towards Zion. We drove through Zion and had some serious indecision problems that led us to driving back and forth through this really long tunnel 4 times. Finally we chose Lake Powell as our destination as we were all hot and wanted a swim, so we drove another 3 hours to make it there. When we arrived we got some advice to head out to horseshoe bend which we decide was our favorite spot -- lounged there and talked about life before finding a camping spot on the other side of the lake. We got some chicken and set up camp and had a night filled with bears, lightnening and french.
In the morning, we woke up early and headed out to antelope canyon which is a canyon on an indian reservation that has beautiful lighting and shapes. Then we decided to go back to zion because we had missed what we thought was the essence of it. We took the tram up to the top and then hiked through water for another hour or so before heading back.
we had decided to death valley the next day so we headed straight through vegas without dinner, hoping to stop in the next town. Well, there was no "next town" only a prison. So we headed on. Then we found a gas station and there were no restaurants open, so we had to make a decision. It was either bed with no dinner, or head in another direction. Phil chose the other direction. There we found a casion that would have been expensive AND had no food. So we asked for some friendly advice which had us travelling through the middle of NOWHERE to Puhrump. Let me tell you, Puhrump is probabley the coolest. There was a sonic... soo we ate some dinner and then tried to get a hotel, but they were full. Yes, sunday nights in puhrump are WILD. So we tried another and they wanted a 21 year old... sooooo we drove BACK to vegas. Then, missed the exit and had to go another 2 hours to Baker. Where we got to stay within sight of the worlds largest thermometer in the seediest motel. the next morning we got our free coffee and made use of the pool before heading home.
it was glorious.
