Our accommodation in Selçuk (said Sell Chook) was the Boomerang Guesthouse, and one could be mistaken for thinking we had arrived back in Melbourne somewhere. The walls were adorned with NRL footy jerseys, beer paraphrenalia and stuffed koalas. Abdullah, our host, punctuated his sentences with "no worries", "bloody.." and my favourite, "youse". Best of all though, he had Vegemite on the breaky menu. Abdullah (Apo for short) headed the family owned business. His father Mehmet spoke virtually no English but smiled a lot. There are 12 siblings in the family (they have cold winters) and 2 of the sons live in Australia, hence the connection.
Another good thing about the Boomerang Guesthouse is the door handles. They are sturdy. This is important to Cam and I, because we are currently averaging 1 door handle per month. We would like to think that we have acquired super-hero strength, but really we just suck at opening doors. We have adopted a practice of checking out and quietly leaving the key (with broken door handle still attached) on the reception desk.
