2/29/08

Today, we officially start our long trek back east for our semi-annual doctors' appointments, but more importantly to visit with friends and relatives that we miss a whole bunch.  We really like our nomad lifestyle but there is a down side to everything.  Nothing is scheduled as far as doctors are concerned until the third week of April so we have plenty of time to visit along the way and for visits when we're back in the Pittsburgh area.
We stopped off in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and spent the afternoon with Ralph and Bev.  It's nice that we've been able to see them as often as we have since the start of out little adventure in July.
We made arrangements to meet up with Jean's brother Phil and family in Great Smoky Mountains National Park Dink

.  It's been getting a tad chillier as we head north and east and we had to delay by one day getting to the Great Smokys due to freezing rain.  I'm not too intimidated by snow, but freezing rain scares me.  We met up with the Phil's family on March 9th.  We really can't remember getting here but according to the gas receipts, we went through the rest of Texas, several gas stops in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama,  and Tennessee, and I think an overnight or two in a couple of those states.  Jean and I were having a discussion one evening on whether or not we stopped in Abilene, Texas.  We couldn't remember, but we had pictures of the campground.  Musta stopped!
The Great Smokys are quite beautiful and we did some sightseeing around that area.  The park service has done a wonderful job restoring and maintaining some of the original homesteads.

Back on the road toward our most eastern destination, New Jersey via Maryland and Delaware otherwise known as the land of outrageous tolls.  Why New Jersey you may ask. Wellll..........
Jean still visits the Internet Miniature Pinscher Service web site, also known as IMPS.  Thats the organization we volunteered with and fostered for when we were living in Lower Burrell Cody, Dink, and Maggie
Cody, Dink, and Maggie
.  Anyway, on this website was a picture of this cute (adorable even) red min-pin that no one seemed to want to adopt.  Since we only have three dogs and a cat and this huge 5th wheel, well, the rest is history.  Allow me to introduce you to "Dink", the only reason I would be willing to drive to New Jersey.  Dink is adjusting well to his new home and he doesn't chase the cat as much as he did.  He really didn't know what to do with her once he caught her anyway.
While in New Jersey we were finally able to meet Billie who was fostering Dink and is the co-regional co-ordinator of IMPS.  We were also invited to the home of Nancy (the other co-regional co-ordinator) and Vince (the IMPS national treasurer).  They're even nuttier than we are because they travel with 9 min pins, but it gives us something to aspire to.  It was really nice to meet them after working with them via phone and e-mail for so long.
After leaving New Jersey we drove to daughter Mary's and her hubby Brian's home in Littlestown, Pa., and camped in their driveway for a few days.  For those of us that have a hard time with their re-memories (Sierra's word), Littlestown is just south of Gettysburg.  We had a great time and, as always, enjoyed their hospitality.  Plus, they took us to some great places to eat.  Daughter Ginny wanted to meet us there with the grandchildren, but Charles had a virus and he was too sick to come.  Very disappointing.
