We went on a canyoneering and white water rafting tour two days ago in La Fortuna. JF described this as one of the best things we'd done on any trip, ever. And I concur. I am also happy that neither of us had a stroke while we were throwing ourselves over 200 foot drops.
I am not one to spend time advertising for a tour company, but honestly, Desafio Tours, were amazing!! They guides were funny, knowledgable, and made us feel like we were not crazy for entertaining the notion of throwing ourselves down waterfalls and jumping into pools. We spent the afternoon rafting down a class 2-3 river - which was just the right amount of rapids for me
We went on a volcano hike the following day. This too was part of a tour, but really it served as a painful reminder of how excellent the previous tour had been. Just to briefly summarize: the bus was late (apparently it had broken down - not surprising - it sounded like a dying tractor); Our guide failed to tell us his name - ever ( given the caliber of the events that followed I assumed he did not wish to be identified); our guide slept, slumped over by the door while we drove to the volcano, he spent a good amount of time putting band aids on his feet while the tour group waited, he then told us that the likelihood of seeing wildlife had probably been oversold by the tour broker, our hike was really a stroll (a nice stroll - but not a hike in the Canadian sense) . . . he capped off the night by getting drunk on the alcohol that the tour was given in the final segment of the tour - what I like to call bathing in a thermal hot springs disguised as a concrete overpass (actually it was nice, but I am certain the complete darkness enhanced the effect).
There's more. But hopefully other members of my family will fill you in!
