As we reached our cruising velocity of 110kph small missiles began firing up off the road and slamming into the bull bars and fender. The giant grasshoppers in this part of the country seem to have a deathwish. They sun themselves on the bitumen, and milliseconds before you run over them, catapult themselves upwards and end their lives in a loud crack on the windscreen that sounds like it's gonna cave in. We drove through bushfires today as well. We could see from 100km away what we thought were two low white clouds which turned out to be fires, and we passed through them after lunch, still burning and smoldering away on both sides of the road. Hot damn!
Port Hedland is an ugly industrial town that is used to export iron ore. Massive tankers wait in cues offshore to be loaded and sail for China and Japan.
We got a cabin as Nick inexplicably needed to watch England lose at cricket yet again against Australia.
