Noosa was so relaxing that after 4 days and with a fully functioning Molly we realised suddenly that we had around 1500km to go in only 3 days to reach Cairns and meet Kerrys mum. We got back on the Bruce Highway first thing and headed North all day, through a cartoon monotonous landscape of tarmac, trees and repeat. The only variety was a sighting of our first Kangaroo in Australia, regretfully but predictably lying dead and covered in flies by the side of the road.
We made it through the Beef capital of Australia: Rockhampton where uncannily we couldn't find a steak but eventually snagged a couple and kept going until dusk at which point, for fear of colliding with a marauding roo, pulled off the road to enjoy the delights and luxuries of the Marlborough Hotel.
The 'hotel' comprised a gravel truck carpark littered with a few sprigs of grass and a forest of white poles with power sockets on the end. You couldn't have chosen a more unflattering site if you'd have tried. People glanced shiftily at you from under trucker caps as you walked across to the 'amenities'. It's the kind of place where touring serial killers hang out. Ridden with insects and mosquitoes. We had a pleasant nights sleep broken only by the juggernauts thundering past within 20 feet of the van. Never mind, we were back on the road for 8 and heading closer to Cairns.
