Hervey Bay is a quiet seaside town a little up from Noosa whose main function, backpacker wise is that everyone gets a boat to Fraser Island from here which is the largest sand island in the world. As it's not something my dad would be into we decided to leave this for later but pursued the other reason people come to Hervey Bay. Whale Watching. And it was the perfect time of the year as the whales stop in the bay around October for a rest from their long migration.
So we all went on a boat and sure enough we saw loads of whales. They move around in 'Pods' which are like family units; a female, male and calf. As they are naturally inquisitive and are on a break anyway they come up to the boat and roll around, slapping their collosal pectoral fins on the water and 'breaching' which is where they somehow propel their enormous bulk out of the water and crash back down causing small tidal waves. Their behaviour is captivating to watch as they seem to be acting up for the boat however this is how they move when noone is around. They are such magnificent and gentle creatures and it's a pleasure to see them. The cruise itself was a professional outfit, the crew were informative and upbeat, making sure everyone got the best out of the trip.
The next day we got back on the road as we had a little further to go to reach Cairns, only 1500km.
