J J P Snr. landed in Sydney at 18.29 on the 21st October. Almost immediately the demand on English breakfast tea (leaves NOT bags, two sugars NO milk) rose by an unprecedented 2000%. Over the next few days shockwaves of concern spread around the cities cafes, and those in Kings Cross, who were hardest hit, simply failed to cope with the sudden onslaught and buckled under the pressure, left as demoralised wrecks in the wake of this honoured British tea-phile and inveterate caffeine addict.
So amid regular stops for brews Kerry and I did our best to show my dad around Sydney and took him on a stroll around the always pleasurable arc of the botanical gardens which terminate at the Opera House, followed by a drink in the Opera Bar which looks out onto Circular Quay and the harbour bridge. Awfully civilised don't you know. The day after we took a ferry out to one of the many bays and had very nice fish and chips at Doyles which has totally monopolised the takeaways at Watsons Bay and has a chippy for every wallet dad and lad

. You can eat on the pier, outside the pub or in the swanky restaurant next door for nearly double the price. They all have a great view and the fare is probably of a similar quality.
On the Saturday night before we left we had one last splurge before offically becoming scruffy backpackers again and for my dads birthday went to see Rigoletto at the opera house. He insisted what a brilliant night it was although he slept through a good portion of it, me nudging him when the snoring became audible. I think I enjoyed the meal beforehand more to be honest. I appreciate the production, and skill of the performers but it all seems a bit too silly and farcical to me.
Anyway it was time to leave Sydney and head North. We set off early to avoid the traffic and drove across the bridge in the direction of Hunter Valley.
