The Road Trip continues...

After Fraser Island we continued south but just had to stop for the day at Australia Zoo – "home of the crocodile hunter" (Steve Irwin). His photo is still everywhere and there is even a shrine and highway named after him in the area. We had a brilliant day – highlights included seeing the crocodile show in the 'Crocoseum' (Jez pretended to be a monkey and won a prize, shown on the big screen. Embarrassing!), stroking kangaroos, holding a koala, feeding elephants and seeing tigers swimming under water. We also saw a wombat for the first time.

Noosa Heads

We stayed a night in Noosa Heads – an upmarket resort set around beautiful beaches, a river system as well as a national park. As we were strolling along the beach everyone was ordered out of the water as sharks had been spotted!

We stopped to admire the skyline and wander along the ‘south bank’ – complete with big wheel!

The Gold Coast

We hadn’t quite anticipated the number of high-rise hotels etc along the coastline. Surfers Paradise was home to a great beach with great waves but a bit of a concrete jungle without much character. We drove along the coast through Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach and Miami until we reached Burleigh Heads where we spent a night in a campsite full of families on Christmas break – lots of Christmas trees and tinsel woven round tent poles! We had a great afternoon in Byron Bay (and sunbathed for the first time on our trip thank god!). Jez hired a body board to make the most of the surf.

We had a long drive to the Hunter Valley and stopped off at Coffs Harbour along the way. We arrived at Ian and Jenny’s house in East Maitland just in time for a bbq feast – and it was a food and drink-fest for the next two days! We had a great tour around the famous Hunter Valley vineyards (there are hundreds – heaven! And it’s all about the Shiraz and Semillon). Thanks for treating us like a King and Queen Mr and Mrs Morphy. We loved the chilli chutney!
