We did however manage to fit in some cultural excursions at the Museum of Modern Art (which was FREE!). There were exhibitions by Colombian, Peruvian and Ecuadorian artists. We didn't think much of the Ecuadorian one but the Colombian and Peruvian ones were amazing. We felt very cultural and pleased with ourselves. Jill was particularly pleased to learn that she likes art galleries because she hates museums but feels that she needs to be slightly cultural.
A guy came up to us in the bus station saying he had a hostal...we were very cautious obviously but he gave us a really good price, including breakfast and paid for a proper taxi to take us there (we wouldn't have gone if it had just been a random lift obviously!). It turned out to be really nice as it turned out to be their home with a few rooms rented out. It was nice to be in a home....and we got a bit more Spanish practise in too.
We really feel that we didn't do Cuenca justice as it was a really nice place and we only stayed there one night (probably under 24 hours). It was quite like Popayan...you know, pretty streets, pretty churches, not much to do apart from drink coffee, eat ice cream and wander about. Though we did get chatted up in the park by a group of guys who can't have been older than 18 and their opening line was..."Are you from Cuenca?". Stupid children haha!
Where I stayed
A random house with no name!
