As I wrote before, for this trip, I didn't know much about Punta Arenas, other than it was a very southern city. I soon found out that there was wildlife to see (more on that in the next entry) and a large park for hiking nearby.
I did the hike with three others that I met in the hostel and it was wonderful. We took a taxi to the entrance of the Reserva Nacional Magallanes (1.500 CLP entry fee). Although the weather was windy and mostly gray, we reached a spectacular view of the city from one of the vistas
As we began our descent back to the town, we got to see a divine ray of light over the lake. But soon our stomachs convinced us that we needed to return sooner and we decided to try to hitchhike a ride back down the hill. After a few unsuccessful hails, we got the attention of a white pickup truck. We were excited in climbed into the back. Then we realized that the truck had been carrying animal manure! We were too tired from walking to get out. It literally stunk, but we had a fun ride back down!
