If you don't like dogs, then Chile might not be the place for you. There are lots of stray dogs in addition to the ones that people own. I haven't seen so many since being in Pompei or Athens.

The strays are pretty much everywhere. They are usually resting or trying to get the attention of those passing by. 99% of the time they are sociable, friendly, and not aggressive. For the 1%, I am glad that I have my rabies vaccination. Honestly though, I haven't met a mean stray dog yet. I haven't even been barked at once by one. I find it surprisingly how they roam nearly wherever they want, and people don't mind. As my friend has described them, they're "public dogs".

My friends' dog, Bock, is really funny. He will bark at strangers who walk by. But he always wants to play and tries to sneak into the house when the door is open and no one is watching. When he knows people are inside, he likes to peep through the windows and see what's going on. He can be somewhat intimidating because he's a huge Rott, but other than that, there's not much to be afraid of – he's a still puppy inside. Being huge also means that when he's excited and jumping around that landing on your bare foot isn't all that pleasant. It's happened to me a few times now. ;)
