We took off walking to
tour the St. Patrick Cathedral
It dates back to 1190, with its tower and spire soaring to 68m (223 feet). We stayed for the Episcopal services. Packed our suitcases and headed out of Dublin, on the way out we stopped to take a tour of Kilmainham Gaol
. Built in 1792 it is Ireland's most famous disused prison. It held throughout the years many famous Nationalists and Republicans in members of the Society of United Irishmen (1798), Young Irelanders (c1840s), Fenians and Land agitators, Parnell, Davitt. The leaders of the 1916 Ester Rising were executed here. The prison was closed in 1924
. This building gives a good insight into the history of Irish Republicanism. It also held the famine victim during the 1840's and 1850's the gaol became overcrowded with people who had committed petty crimes in order to qualify for the prison gruel.
Some of the people who served time and was also beheaded or hanged, include Padraic Pearse, Thomas Clarke, Joseph Plunkett, James Connolly and the other leaders of the 196 Easter Rising. The last prisoner to be released before it closed in 1924 was the Republican leader Eamon De Valera - later to become both head of government and president of Ireland .
Our driving was taking us toward Mount Juliet Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny
. Arrived and got a nice room, went down to the pub to have food and drinks. Talked with the girl bartender, learned that knats are called midgets in Ireland. Tried a baby Guinness (shot of Tia Maria and layered with Baileys Irish Cream).
