Hey again Last night, we went out for supper (which was stupid because of the holiday, there was hardly anything open). And what was open was mainly bars and weird shady places, or expensive places. We went into one restaurant that TJ insisted on, but Jess didn't want to go to since it looked a little shady. But we went anyway, sat down once we found the restaurant in the maze of a building. We were the only ones in it, a man seated us, and we looked over the strange menu. Neither of us picky eaters could find anything we wanted even a little, and it was kinda pricy. We didn't know what to do, since we were the only customers, and didn't want to stay. TJ decided to book it out of there fast, before the guy saw us so we wouldn't have to explain why we were leaving. We just didn't want to explain, "uhh, sorry, your menu is weird and we don't want to eat anything on it" so we waited until he went into the kitchen (the one worker there since it was so deserted) and we speedwalked out of the place, through the maze and back down the deserted street to our car for our "getaway". It wasn't really that bad, Jess felt like we were stealing something, but we didn't do anything wrong. We just avoided explaining ourselves to him. And since the streets were deserted, Jess decided it would be a good time to try driving on the other side of the road. SHE DID REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY WELL!!!!!!!!! Way better than TJ. hehe. Guess who's typing? But really . . . I was amazing! I didn't almost hit anything (there wasn't much around to hit) but I stayed in the correct lane and parked fine (probably because I've been monitoring TJ's driving to make sure we don't end up in the wrong lane or anything). Jess was proud of herself. TJ looked nervous the whole time (but for no reason, I couldn't have hit anything if I tried). We finally found a little pizza place (which we didn't really want because we had pizza the previous night), it was also a bar, and there were a few guys in there intently watching a cricket match. It was not very interesting to us, but cool to watch and try and figure out. Apparently TJ played in rec ed so he had a vague idea, but Jess was completely clueless. It's a very slow moving sport. Or maybe that's just because we didn't understand what was going on. Then we went back to the campground and TJ beat Jess in mini golf (by quite a bit due to one particularly nasty hole). It was a really cool mini golf course. It had obsticles from all the different sites in the area, which was a nice idea (water hazard included). Then we returned to our site, played more rummy and read for the rest of the night. Then in the morning, we got up, and sadly discovered that our bagels had gone moldy in the humidity, so we're only buying one pack at a time (which only lasts us two days so we're in a grocery store every few days now) oh well. Then we left for Greymouth, straight south of Westport. When we drove through Westport this morning it was no longer a ghost town, but there was still not much to the town. The drive to Greymouth was really really nice, very scenic (without the crazy winding road, only mildly curvy). We got out of town and were gauking at the scenery, when TJ realized with Jess's driving lessons the night before, we forgot to get fuel, and then we passed a sign saying "no fuel for 87km" and we had less than a quarter tank. YIKES!!! We thought we'd be ok, and braved on. We barely made it to the little town that had the gas station in it. We thought it was dumb to have a sign saying "no gas for a certain # of kms" when you HAVE NO GAS STATION AROUND TO FIX IT!!! Silly. The scenery was so sweet but we were scared to stop at the lookout points to get pics because of our gas issue. But we stopped at a few anyway. After we gased up we continued on to Greymouth and there's not much to this town either (even though it's the biggest city on the west coast of the south island), it's probably similar to the size of Lacombe (probably not even that big). But it had restaraunts and grocery stores, which was all we wanted, so we were happy, although they have two Nelson Streets within two blocks of eachother so we struggled to find the campsite. But we made it! It's right on the beach, which is nice. So we'll head down there later this afternoon. Hope everyone is doing well. Talk again soon!

Eating (reply) Feb 6, 2007 23:35 EST by ljhartel
Great job getting the wheel from TJ. Bev would have forced the issue long before this. You are much more patient.
Eating, Rule of thumb we thought you had been taught by us....look for where the locals or truck drivers eat...this is always the best food and cheapest price. Never eat in a place alone, it is usually empty for a reason.
