Hello all. We are in Asuncion today, headed to Guarambare tomorrow for a week of training. Looking forward to a change of pace. I want to tell you all about our lives, what's going on with our work &c., but I'm going to start with the pictures and write later, because I can write in Guarambare. So, y'all should check the log all week because I'm going to keep adding to this entry. And, basically I'm planning on living in the internet cafe, so if you write me an e-mail I might even be able to write you back. I love you all and can't wait to hear about your summers and going back to school plans (for some of you, anyway).
So what have we been up to? I like to bake bread. The other day I baked bread with two six year olds (cinnamon raisin) and another day Simon and I baked together. My favorite thing that has happened in site so far is that a complete stranger walked up to our house and gave me a dozen eggs. I'm sure she knew who I was, but I had to ask several people who she was. So I baked a loaf of bread for her. When we took it to her, she gave us a huge bag of peanuts and 6 eggs. I was delighted. Now I get to make her another gift and go and chat some more.
I've also made my own curtains and sheets and turned Simon's holey socks into dishtowels. And I clean and I cook (Simon does too) and I wash clothes and iron and I've made my own yogurt and granola and sometimes I even leave the house.
I'm working on a reading-writing project with the teachers; Saturday the two of them are coming over to our house and we're going to make puzzles and books and games and alphabets. I think I'll bake bread for the occasion.
Simon and I went to the school together to give the 2nd and 3rd graders toothbrushes and talk about dental hygiene and brush our teeth together. We all had fun and we're going to go every monday to talk about health issues.
Simon is going to build a fogon (a stove/oven that channels the smoke out of the house and is high enough the kids can't run in to the fire and therefore a vast improvement on the current system of cooking with a wood fire on the floor). I'm looking forward to baking some bread in it. He's also trying to get a losa project going with the women's commission (see picture of Jess smoothing losa for explanation).
And we read a lot. And go to bed around 8.
