Worst bus ride ever. Well, the bus itself was fine, but it was more the passengers. Partuclarly the ones who robbed me. Yes, I just got robbed on a bus in Mexico. Should I be surprised? Probably not. Am I upset? Most definitely. Hereīs how it went down:

I got on the bus in Puerto Escondido with about 20 other gringos. We were all travelling to the same place, so a few us of chatted for a bit in the back, then I fell asleep. I noticed a couple come and sit down in front of me and start making out, but I didnīt think too much of it. At some point in time, I put my bag on the floor in front of me. When I woke up at 7:30, my Ipod and pretty much all my cash was gone, as well as my datastick. It was a fairly rookie mistake...the bag on the floor...but I still feel really terrible. Everything was insured (except for the cash, damnit...and I didnīt split it up like normal...there goes about 200$ grrrr).

Of course itīs not the end of the world, and I have a lot to be grateful for. I also had my laptop with me, and they left that, as well as all my credit cards, some cash (US dollars...bless their little hearts...didnīt want to leave me completely stranded!!) my camera and generally my bag, which is harder to replace. However, I feel a bit foolish, as I should have been more diligent. I also feel helpless and violated and generally unhappy.

Once in San Cristobal, I filled out a report and surprisingly enough my spanish didnīt fail me despite being on the verge of tears. Apparently this type of crime has been happening a lot, and I certainly wasnīt the first, nor will I be the last. The guys were really nice filling out the report with me, and then I met up with some other backpackers for a coffee and ride into town.

I think everyone (including me!) was surprised how well I handled it. I guess it is just stuff....but mostly I canīt get over the feeling of being really paranoid and victimized. I had a good cry when I got to my hostel, and now Iīm looking into my insurance stuff to see what I have to do. Most annoying? I have no music to cheer myself up with!!

costs for today, excluding theft: Hostel 5$, food (including a couple beer!) 8.50$, taxis 4$
