After Arthur's Pass, we were ready to head towards civilization and warmer weather. So we got up bright and early and headed to the West Coast of South Island NZ. We had no plans at the start of the day, we just took it as it came. NZ does not dissapoint. Our first stop was the Pukaikaki Pancake Rocks. This is a cliff of limestone which was shaped by wind, tides, and unknown things to look like a stack of pancakes in the rocks. The tasman sea is in the back ground. After this, Melissa and I wanted an upper body work out so we went "canoeing". This is really kayaking (these darn NZ folks and their different words). We kayaked up the Punkaiki River for an hour. Melissa was bitten by a pirahnna. Nope, j/k. Wanted to keep your attention.
Next we decided to go to a town called Hokitika. We stayed in a stunning hostel. We walked the Black sand beach, which is known for jade. We found 3 pieces, Melissa tried to pawn them, but it did not work. After that we drove to the Hokitika Gorge. It was a 30 minute drive on gravel there. Once there we had to walk on a "swing bridge" aka extremely scary bridge. The water was a blue i have never seen before. There is a pic of it here. It is like the bluest sky mixed with clouds. Amazing.
