The night before

It's the night before I leave, after 11 PM and I'm running on pure adrenaline after several weeks of less than 5-ish hour of sleep a night, way, way too much meat and fast food and physical exercise amounting to little more than running from the car to the next less-than-clean restroom along the road. I've driven more than 5,000 miles and not even left on the major trip of the summer! But in the meantime I've welcomed my love home from Thailand, shared in his parents' joy as they move into a gorgeous home in the mountains of Colorado, hugged my cherished nanny at our yearly lunch at Gannett Grill, chatted with college buddies, laughed, cried and yes, fought with my beautiful inside and out sisters, watched my dad marry a woman who makes him giggle and vice-versa and reveled in the comfort of the familiarity of family who know you but love you for every silly quirk and shared memory and give you the very shirt from their backs with a smile.
After another night of less than 5 hours of sleep I will fly to Atlanta, wait 5 hours, fly to Paris, wait 10 hours, fly to coastal Cotonou and stay a night or two until I set out for the 5-8 hour bus or "bush taxi" ride to northern Parakou where I'll settle in for the two month adventure in Africa that we've all been waiting for...
