After a record sized bon fire in the gorgeous high plains hills and rocky outcroppings of Happy Jack outside of Laramie, WY and our fill of charred hot dogs and gooey smores last night, Jeff, Stephanie, Bethany (the last two being my sisters) and I headed out this morning for Iowa. Another long drive. But I left with a full heart, grateful for the friends God's dropped into my life--thinking here of a college turned life-long buddy who got up extra early to run to the store and make us waffles, eggs and bacon served up with fresh fruit and yogurt. I love the feeling of inexpressible gratitude that overtakes me when someone expresses such a generous love that I'm sure I don't deserve. Made the day ahead seem brighter. Then we made the obligatory stop at Cabella's ("World's Foremost Outfitters") to get me a mosquito net! Almost there and the sky broke into a splotchy cloud mask and drizzling rain. The sun persisted, shining in the from the north and soon a brilliant, majestic rainbow appeared with its two feet firmly planted within our view and a fainter but just as full partner arching protectingly above as they proudly smiled down on the fresh green fields and trees through the somber clouds. I found myself crying (not unusual) and grateful again for what I felt like was God reaching down to place a reassuring hand on my shoulder as I drove toward my dad's wedding (day after tomorrow) and the uncertainty of Africa in the next two months. Maybe I over dramatize, but what a sad place the world would be without the assurance that a creator not just benevolent but loving has his eye out for all of us and places beauty in our paths when we most need it.
