Did a day trip from Bordeaux to the town of Perigueux. Our aim was to get to the Lascaux II caves but we discovered that there is no way to get to them by public transport and it is too long a taxi drive. The caves contain the oldest cave paintings in existence, including a 5m high bull. Shame we couldnŽt see them. But Perigueux has a lot of ancient history too.
It has a Gallo Roman section and a Medieval section to the town. The Roman dates back to the 1st century and there was some amazing ruins of ampitheatres and temples etc. The Medieval part is still in use and is equally as impressive. This is probably my favourite town, in terms of people. There were markets on, as it was a Sunday, and we thought weŽd try some of their local cheeses and everyone was helping us with our French and being so nice and then we just sat down to eat and random people would just walk past and say: "Bon Apetit Madame-Monsieur", oh how cute. The French are so social and public, definitely not as rude and arrogant as people make them out to be (except a couple of instances).
