Today was spent in transit and in awe. We checked out just after eight and took the forty minute train out to Sorrento, then caught a bus that took us all the way out to Amalfi. This was a wild bus ride. It took a little more than two hours, but it went through some pretty wild turns. I must have taken about fifty pictures on that bus alone, and hopefully they all turn out. When we got to Amalfi, it was a ten minute walk around the coast to get to Atrani, the village we were staying in. The hostel was tucked away back through a couple sets of stairs, but we found it eventually, and left our things there.
The hostel was what I had envisioned hostels being from the start (my first of this kind). It was a large space broken down originally into large rooms and bathrooms, then in to smaller rooms by dividing walls of sheet-rock (no ceilings). This gave it an interesting feel, but we didn't really care all that much. We wanted the beach, so we took off for it.
Just like Capri, the water was unbelievably clear. It was a great temperature, too, and we all dove in. The floor of the ocean was mostly head-sized rocks, which made it interesting to try and stand still and throw a Frisbee, but we gave it a shot. I also ended up swimming out to a buoy with Emily and Jen, who were the only ones in the water at that time that could swim. Evan never learned, Allison hurt her ankle the week before, Brittany and Tai were laying out, and Dhru was getting food or something. He is seriously challenging Tai to the Triple H title (Hungry Hungry Hippo), because he is always ready to eat. Trip to Atrani
Trip to Atrani
I tried to take a series of pictures that could later be put into a collage showing 360 degrees of the beach we were at and the mountains around us, but I don't know if I can get that all on this blog. We'll just have to wait and see.
We had a nice dinner at this restaurant ran by two guys named Luigi. They get rave reviews on travel and hostel sites all the time, and they did not disappoint. We had the spaghetti Atrani, which had a sauce made of olive oil, crushed garlic, roasted red pepper and a little cheese on top. It was spicy, simple and tasty, so I know I'll be making it at the apartment next semester. It was happy hour, as well, so we enjoyed some fine mixed drinks with the food. During dinner I had a long island iced tea that reminded me of Harry's back at Purdue, and Evan had a drink named after one of the guys who worked there (not one of the Luigi's). For desert, I had a white Russian and Evan had an Irish coffee. It was only us two for dinner because Tai and Dhru wanted to eat somewhere on the shore and this place was behind the wall that supported the only street in to the town (therefore no view of the ocean for us, oh well). After we all met up again, we stayed at the Luigis' place for some drinks and cards, then the four guys went for a walk to Amalfi. We found what appeared to be a concrete helicopter pad at the end of a pier, so we hung out there for a while before heading back to the hostel for the night.
