Today we leave for Russia, But not directly. Our first stop is Helsinki, from here we will fly off to St Petersburg. We land in Helsinki around four o'clock. The weather is miserable, rain and for us it is bloody cold. The flight with FinAir was good and luckily they did not make much fuzz about our luggage. Everything was a tad overweight especially our carry-ons, but luckily they did not check those.
In Finland we booked the Best Western Katajanokka hotel. This hotel is a converted prison, something different we thought. My o my what is this place expensive, the taxi ride from the airport to the hotel costs around 40 Euro, a bottle of water in the hotel was 4 Euro. Despite the bad weather we decided to go out for some food. We found a nice Thai place in the neighborhood on tripadvisor so we headed there. Walking down Helsinki we found the city cold and quiet. This must be a very depressing place in winter. After a little walk we found the restaurant. The food was good, but the prices steep as everywhere. On our way back we bought some dessert and water in a convenience store close to the hotel. We quickly went back as the rain got worse and worse.
We concluded that the stay in Helsinki was interesting but actually quite a waste of money. The next morning we headed out to St Petersburg, our first stop in Russia. We have read gruesome horror stories about taxi drivers ripping off tourists on their way to their hotels. So luckily we managed to arrange a pick up service from the airport to the hotel from Helsinki.
